Suspect in East Village gay beating surrenders to cops

A suspect wanted in the attack of a gay man in the East Village turned himself in Wednesday.

Gornell Roman, 39, surrendered to cops at the 41st Precinct in the Bronx late Tuesday night, just hours after Police Commissioner Ray Kelly identified him as the one who allegedly attacked Dan Contarino Monday night.

Kelly said Roman, who was awaiting arraignment on assault as a hate crime charges in Manhattan Criminal Court Wednesday, "snapped" after Contarino revealed he was gay and beat him. The city has seen an increase of hate crimes against gays this year with 29 attacks reported this year compared to 14 during the same period in 2012, according to the NYPD.

On Tuesday, cops arrested Fabian Ortiz, 32, of Washington Heights, and Pedro Jimenez, 23, of Brooklyn for allegedly shouting homophobic slurs and beating up a gay couple in lower Manhattan.
