The man suspected in the shooting of a livery cab driver in Queens last month that ignited a debate over whether to racially profile passengers was nabbed in a Buffalo apartment yesterday, police said.
After authorities tracked down Shawn Peace, 22, of Queens, reportedly through his cell phone use, he was brought back to the city yesterday to face second-degree attempted murder and other weapons and robbery charges. Peace faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
“Once again we are sadly reminded of the dangers faced by taxi and livery drivers in the course of their work and the senseless gun violence that surrounds us,” said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.
The cabbie, Trevor Bell, 53, remained at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center yesterday where a spokesman said he was in stable condition, adding that Bell could be released as soon as next week.
Peace allegedly shot Bell six times in an attempted robbery after Bell picked him up in Jamaica on Dec. 3.
In response to the shooting, top taxi advocate Fernando Mateo encouraged livery cab drivers to racially profile passengers, for which he was rebuked.
