New York City fire officials say an SUV plunged about 40 feet down an elevator shaft at a Manhattan garage, injuring two people.

WCBS-TV says a parking attendant pulled the SUV into an elevator on the 5th floor — but the lift wasn't there. The vehicle fell to the first floor and landed upside-down.

The attendant in the vehicle and another in the elevator were hurt. Both are in stable condition at New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center.

Alex Spatt, of Manhattan, was on his way to a gym next door when he saw firefighters pull the car out. He says the roof was badly crushed.

The cause of the Tuesday morning accident at a Hertz garage at 76th Street and First Avenue is under investigation.
