Just as The Pink Tea Cup was shutting its doors for good Sunday after 55 years in the West Village, ambitious supporters opened new ones for the soul food eatery.

After an intense online effort led by fans to raise awareness and funds to save the restaurant, filmmaker Lawrence Page announced he bought the name for $400,000 and plans to reopen the restaurant nearby with the original staff later this month.

Page in 2008 rescued another Village institution when he revived the Actors’ Playhouse.

“It’s sort of surreal. It hasn’t sunk in yet because we’ve been working so hard,” said Ebonie Johnson Cooper, a patron who helped to lead the aggressive fundraising and PR campaign.

“Team Teacup,” which also includes Ezinne Kwubiri, solicited support through a Facebook page and held a fundraiser on Sunday.

The donations will help set up the new spot, which will reportedly be near Bleecker Street and Seventh Avenue South.

“We’re appreciative to everyone who stepped up,” Kwubiri said Monday. “They didn’t have to. They just dug deep in their pockets to help a local business.”
