New Yorkers have decided that they want a Turkish minivan to be the cabs that roam their streets, but the city still has the final say on what model will serve as the “Taxi of Tomorrow.”

Since Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced in November a competition to find the first custom-built taxi cab for the city, an overwhelming 66 percent of New Yorkers voted for the Karsan V1 over cab models presented by Ford and Nissan. The Karsan includes features such as wide-open doors and ramps on each side for wheelchairs, a panoramic sunroof, and a mini fridge for cab drivers.

A Taxi & Limousine Commission spokesman said the poll will “inform the final decision” by an agency panel. The TLC has no set date to declare a winner.
