What we know

• Six of the eight people killed Tuesday were foreign tourists, five men from Argentina and one woman from Belgium.
• The other two people killed were Nicholas Cleves, 23, of Manhattan and Darren Drake, 33, of New Milford, New Jersey.
• The attack is the deadliest terrorist event in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001.
• The suspect is Sayfullo Saipov, 29, an Uzbek immigrant who came to the United States in 2010, a police official said.
• Saipov prepared for the attack for “a number of weeks,” officials said Wednesday.
• He came to Manhattan four times before the attack in what were believed to be reconnaissance missions, a law enforcement source said.
• Saipov appeared to follow ISIS instructions put out on social media, an NYPD official said.
• He faces charges of provision of material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization and violence and destruction of a motor vehicle. He had never been the focus of an FBI investigation, officials said Wednesday, though The New York Times, citing three officials, reported Tuesday that he had been on the radar of federal authorities.
• The suspect has a Florida driver’s license, but had been living in Paterson, New Jersey.
• He lived with his wife and three children, sources said.
• Saipov has a green card, sources said. He has driven for Uber for over six months, the AP reported.
• He was shot by NYPD Officer Ryan Nash, 28, of Medford, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said.
• Saipov was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center, sources said. He is expected to survive, the AP said.
• Witnesses told police Saipov shouted “Allahu akbar,” which means “God is great” in Arabic, a law enforcement source said.
• Handwritten notes in Arabic were found near the truck, claiming the suspect committed the attack on behalf of ISIS, a source said.
• The attack is being investigated as an act of terrorism.
• Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said Wednesday that Saipov was “radicalized domestically.”
• Saipov rented the truck at 2:06 p.m. Tuesday from a Home Depot in Passaic, New Jersey, officials said.
• The pickup truck mowed down bicyclists and pedestrians as it drove down a bike path next to the Hudson River in lower Manhattan.
• The suspect got out of the vehicle displaying what appeared to be two firearms — later recovered and determined to be a paintball gun and a pellet gun, O’Neill said.
• In addition to the eight people killed, 15 were injured.
• Four of the injured were two adults and two children in the school bus the suspect hit.
• The injured had serious but not life-threatening injuries, Nigro said.
• The FBI is involved in the investigation, officials said.
• Nash, the police officer who shot Saipov, has been on the job for five years, O’Neill said Wednesday. He works in the First Precinct in lower Manhattan.
