The captured sounds of Brooklyn

Stationed amid the industrial spaces and vinyl-clad row houses of Brooklyn’s Greenpoint neighborhood, the Captured Tracks record label has rapidly become one of the city’s most reliable sources for fresh music.

Founded in 2008 by Mike Sniper, its inception coincided with a fertile burst of young indie bands in similar orbits around the outer borough, and in the intervening years this productive union of sound and scene has yielded sterling results.

Issuing bright jangle-pop and raw noise alike, the vinyl-centric label is united less by their reverb-laden sound than their sharp editorial aspect, using a collector’s eye (and limited print runs) to offer rarity and value in an age of ubiquitous audio. This weekend they mark their fifth anniversary with CT5, a two-day festival highlighting some of their core acts.

DIIV
‘Oshin’
Originally dubbed Dive, after the Nirvana track, this project from Zachary Cole Smithsounds like a faded summer memory on their 2012 debut “Oshin.”

Beach Fossils
‘Beach Fossils’
The 2010 self-recorded debut from Dustin Payseur, with its hollow-eyed, poetic feel and instant-classic cuts like “Daydream,” remains a stunning piece years later, and set a new level of success for the label.

Wild Nothing
‘Gemini’
Released in 2010 right on the heels of “Beach Fossils,” the synthpop-leaning debut from Jack Tatum is borne up by the ’80s-indebted echoes of tracks like “Summer Holiday.”

Widowspeak
‘Widowspeak’
A later addition to the label, the duo of Molly Hamilton and Robert Thomas, originally from Tacoma, Wash., crafted their beguiling 2011 debut from a stock of brooding, rain-lashed pop with haunting, Mazzy Star-like overtones.

Dum Dum Girls
‘Dum Dum Girls 12" EP’
To go back to where it all began, start with this recently reprinted EP. This vinyl release was the double debut of both Captured Tracks and the garage pop band Dum Dum Girls, who have since gone on to record for the venerable Sub Pop label.
