The Met to open doors on Mondays

For the first time in 42 years, you will be able to check out The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Mondays.

Starting July 1, the Met will be open seven days a week. Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Museum, said visitation surged last year heights with a record 6.26 million attendees, so they needed the extra day to accommodate the demand.

"Art is a seven-day-a-week passion, and we want the Met to be accessible whenever visitors have the urge to experience this great museum," Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of the Museum, said in a statement.

The museum instituted the Monday closure in 1971.

The new hours will affect the main museum building on Fifth Avenue and East 82nd Street, as well as The Cloisters museum and garden in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan.

As part of the new schedule, the Met will open at 10 a.m. each day, a half-hour later than usual.
