This Halloween, don't go tacky, go vintage -- here's how

When it comes to Halloween, some of us are perfectly content with strolling into Kmart and grabbing a cheap plastic-and-nylon version of a costume, while others seek out something more creative (and comfortable). With authenticity in mind, three of our staffers swung by vintage mecca Screaming Mimi’s to get outfitted by owner Laura Wills in authentic threads from a bygone era. The result? Pretty flawless Halloween costumes.
On Perrie: Vintage cheerleader
Sleeveless top, $35
Pleated skirt, $39
White patent boots, $58

On Tim: Vintage bandleader
Band jacket, $75
Band jumpsuit, $65
Authentic marching band hats with plumes, $135 each

Wills’ take: “I found a warehouse of old band uniforms and just fell in love with the look,” she said. “It’s fun and classic and brings back memories for my customers who grew up out-of-state. For born-and-bred New Yorkers, they’re able to re-create what they’ve only seen on TV or in movies. It’s such a part of American culture — who doesn’t love a cheerleader?”
On Julie: Vintage stewardess
Red cape, $125
1960s dress, $78
Blue reproduction hat, $48
Authentic Pan Am flight bag, $185

Wills’ take: “I’ve always loved reading about the glamour of traveling in the 1960s. The stewardesses were the epitome of chic! It’s been a favorite costume of ours, and now with the popularity of ‘Pan Am,’ it’s even more relevant.”
Not into committing to a full Halloween look? We adore Screaming Mimi’s handmade, semi-creepy leather masks. We’d throw one on with whatever we felt like stepping out in, come Halloween.

On Julie (C): Leather mask with feather, $115
