Two mayoral candidates announced Monday they will start living more frugally this week to highlight the woes of working class New Yorkers.
Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and former Comptroller Bill Thompson were among the city leaders that agreed to take part in the challenge where they will live for a week on only $92.
UnitedNY and New York Communities for Change, the nonprofits that issued the challenge, said too many New Yorkers who struggle with making the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour cannot handle living in the city. The groups hoped the candidates would gain a new perspective.
Other elected officials who are taking part in the project include council members Letitia James, Jessica Lappin, Donovan Richards, Steve Levin, Ydanis Rodriguez and Jumaane Williams.
