A child playing with a cigarette lighter was the cause of a three-alarm blaze in the Bronx over the weekend, the fire department said.

The fire at an E. 149th Street building on Saturday left 48 people injured, including five with critical injuries, according to the FDNY.

The fire began at the child's fifth floor apartment around 7:30 a.m. and spread through the building.

About 140 members of New York's Bravest fought the fire for two hours before they got it under control. One firefighter suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to the FDNY.

No charges were issued for the fire but it is still under investigation, the fire department said.
