Tickets for Statue of Liberty now available ahead of July 4 reopening

Tickets for the July 4 reopening of the Statue of Liberty went on sale Wednesday, as the monument will finally be back in service after its island sustained major damage from Superstorm Sandy.

The statue itself remained mostly unscathed from Sandy, but the superstorm ravaged the rest of the island, destroying docks and its plumbing and electrical systems.

"We are delighted that Lady Liberty will once again be open to the public. We look forward to providing a safe and enjoyable experience to all of our visitors," Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island Superintendent David Luchsinger said.

Officials announced in March that the state would reopen July 4, after Congress in January approved $59 million to repair the island.

Visitors will be able to access the statue and its crown, with limited access to Ellis Island, which also sustained severe damage from Sandy.

Tickets are available at statuecruises.com, and visitors can reserve them for between July 4 and Sept. 2.
