Tom Cruise: Shocked by split from Katie Holmes

Tom Cruise is finally breaking his silence on his divorce from Katie Holmes, saying the split came as a major surprise.

“I did not expect that,” the “Oblivion” star told German TV network ProSieben, according to E! News.

In his in-depth first interview about their parting since Holmes filed for divorce last June, the 50-year-old actor said that “life is a challenge.”

“To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you — that’s what life is,” Cruise said. “Life is tragicomic. You need a certain sense of humor.”

He also noted that the breakup — which came after five-plus years of marriage — gave him “an incredible amount of time to reflect.”

Holmes, 34, has custody of the couple’s 6-year-old daughter, Suri, while Cruise has visitation rights.

The actress and little Suri live in Chelsea, and are frequently spotted out and about spending mother-daughter time together in the Big Apple.
