A new poll out Thursday showed that if Police Commissioner Ray Kelly threw his hat into the mayoral race, he would face a steep uphill battle against the top three Democratic challengers.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the leading mayoral contender, would trump Kelly, an independent, 48% to 33%, according to the poll by Quinnipiac University. Former Comptroller Bill Thompson and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio would each top Kelly 46% to 34%.

Among the Democrats, 26% favored Quinn, 13% liked Thompson and 10% went for de Blasio.

While Kelly has denied any interest in the job, "he'd be a good mayor, New Yorkers think - but it's still a Democratic town," said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

The survey of 1,066 registered NYC voters had a 3% margin of error.
