A tourist was stabbed in the head during what police called an unprovoked attack as he walked down a midtown street early Sunday morning.
The 23-year-old man told police he and three friends were walking near East 46th Street and Madison Avenue when he noticed a man was following him, an NYPD spokesman said. The victim had called out to his friends who had wandered further up the block when police said the suspect ran up from behind and stabbed him in the base of the head with a steak knife.
The victim, who was not seriously injured, removed the steak knife himself, police said. The knife is now in custody of the NYPD. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center where he was treated and released, police said.
A female friend was also scratched in the face during the incident, police said.
The suspect, described as a male in his 30s, was last seen fleeing toward Fifth Avenue. So far, no arrests have been made, police said.
The victim has since returned to his home state of Washington, per the police spokesman.
