Train held up over white powder
A white powder found on an LIRR train Thursday turned out to be an ordinary household product, a spokesman said.
A Long Island Rail Road train from Penn Station to Huntington was delayed more than a half-hour at Jamaica after passengers reported finding the "white, powdery substance" on the seats, the spokesman said.
Railroad spokesman Sam Zambuto said passengers were moved from the car, and Metropolitan Transportation Authority police boarded the train and ran tests on the substance.
It proved to be "an ordinary household product," Zambuto said. He said he could give more details.
The train, the 10:31 a.m. train from Penn, scheduled to arrive in Huntington at 11:42 a.m., was delayed 37 minutes at Jamaica. That delay also caused delays in Huntington, where another train was scheduled to depart at 11:50 a.m. for passengers connecting to Port Jefferson.
