Transit Museum offering a ride to the past
The New York Transit Museum wants to take riders on a day trip through the city and into the past with vintage train cars.
The downtown Brooklyn museum is offering Nostalgia Rides from the museum to Coney Island and from the Grand Central Terminal shuttle platform to Orchard Beach and Van Cortlandt Park this summer, on trains New Yorkers would have ridden in the early 20th century.
The first Nostalgia Ride is scheduled for June 29 on a vintage 1930s IND train to Coney Island. On July 13, IRT cars built between 1916 and 1925 will travel to Orchard Beach and Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. The final Nostalgia Ride on Aug. 25 will go to Van Cortlandt Park, where riders can visit the 1748 Van Cortlandt House Museum. The vintage trains, complete with time-appropriate ads, show how the transit riders of yesteryear rode in the city.
