A pile of trash probably saved a man’s life Sunday after he leaped from window in his apartment building, police said.

The unidentified 26-year-old man tried to kill himself by jumping from the ninth floor of his building on W.45th Street near Eighth Avenue around noon. The man landed in a pile of garbage bags that cushioned his fall, police said.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition.

Garbage has been piling up around the city over the last week. Sanitation crews have been unable to haul it away because of the lasting effects of the Dec. 26 snow storm.
