Two men accused of plotting to blow up jet fuel tanks at New York’s JFK Airport have been convicted of conspiracy charges.
A federal jury reached the verdict Monday in Brooklyn. Prosecutors had accused Russell Defreitas and Abdul Kadir of scheming to cause a massive explosion by igniting the tanks.
They said Defreitas, a former cargo handler, hatched the plot to avenge the perceived U.S. oppression of Muslims.
Kadir was charged with trying to arrange financing for the plot. He’s a former member of Guyana’s parliament.
The defense had argued that the men were led astray by an informant. Kadir testified that he was against attacking innocent victims.
Kadir was convicted of five charges, but acquitted of surveillance of mass transportation.
