American activist Lori Berenson yesterday was freed from jail in Peru after serving 15 years of a 20-year sentence for working with leftist insurgents.

Berenson, who turns 41 his week, must stay in Peru for the last five years of her sentence.

She was arrested in 1995 for collaborating with an urban guerilla group.

The former MIT student was paroled in May but sent back to jail in August on a technicality, when a judge said police hadn’t confirmed where she would live while on parole in Lima.

She declined to speak to the media.
