Memo to Manhattan motorists: Avoid the East Side and anywhere around the United Nations building and Trump Tower this week.
And take mass transit when possible, the NYPD advises.
With President Donald Trump attending his first UN General Assembly, the city’s normal traffic congestion will go from bad to worse.
Streets near the UN building, First Avenue from 42nd through 48th streets, will be closed to vehicular traffic for the duration of the General Assembly, which wraps up Friday. Other streets will be subject to intermittent closures, while others will have just one lane dedicated to emergency vehicles. Motorcades to and from the UN are also expected to snarl traffic this week.
Parking will be banned on some East Side streets as well, according to the NYPD. Many cross streets in the 50s will have limited access.
The FDR Drive underpass from 41st Street to 48th Street will be open to passenger cars, but trucks and other large vehicles are barred until the end of each day’s session.
Some FDR Drive exit and entrance ramps will be closed for much of each day, although police say they will reopen at the end of each day’s session.
Trump traveled Sunday from his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course to Trump Tower in midtown Manhattan. He has UN events and meetings through Thursday, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters.
