An off-duty state narcotics agent carrying a pistol was arrested after a shooting on Manhattan's Upper West Side on Friday night left two people injured, New York City police said.

The gun belonging to Victor Zambrano, 49, of Manhattan went off as he was arguing with a woman he'd been drinking with earlier in the evening, police said.

The 31-year-old woman suffered an injury to her foot -- possibly from a bullet -- while a 42-year-old man with the pair was shot in the leg, police said.

The shooting happened about 9 p.m. on Amsterdam Avenue near 82nd Street, prompting pedestrians and diners at restaurants in the bustling neighborhood to duck for cover.

The man and woman were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Zambrano is charged with criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and two counts of assault, police said. He was to be arraigned late Saturday.

He is a member of the state Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, which combats illegal use and trafficking of prescription drugs, police said. A call to the bureau seeking comment was not returned.
