Video: Google reveals its insane augmented reality glasses

Google just gave us a window into its future, so to speak.

After months of media speculation, the tech giant revealed a prototype of its futuristic -- and hyper-secretive -- augmented reality glasses project, and they want your feedback about it.

Babak Parviz, Steve Lee and Sebastian Thrun of the company's equally secretive "Google X" lab announced the glasses in a Google Plus post, which also featured photos and video of the specs in action.

"We're sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input," the employees wrote.

Lee, the lead product manager, originally worked on Google mobile maps and location services and is the brains behind the software component and location-detecting aspects of the gadget.

The post includes a video demonstrating the capabilities of the prototype, which has a small screen above one lens and a thick arm extending to the ear. Information will stream from the wearer to the lenses via voice commands.

In addition to voice control, other features include a built-in camera that shoots photo and video, public transit alerts, reminders, Google maps and weather tracking.

Though the release date for the gadget has not been determined, the purpose of the creation is clear.

"We believe technology should work for you -- to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don't," the trio wrote.
