The maturing of Rex Ryan took a major turn Sunday night after the Jets' 37-16 loss to the Patriots. The Jets coach, apparently, is now using his words, one year after he became infamous for his one-fingered salute.
The NFL is investigating a post-game incident in which Ryan cursed out a fan who opined, "Hey Rex, (Bill) Belichick is better than you!"
To which Ryan was caught on video responding, "Shut the f--- up!"
This time, Ryan made his own mea culpa during his day-after press conference.
"I obviously made a mistake," Ryan said. "I have to handle that better.
"I know I represent the NFL. I know I represent the Jets. I shouldn't have said it."
Ryan said he has yet to be contacted by the league.
That wasn't the only bit of vulgarity that spread around MetLife Stadium after the game. Belichick was heard to say to his son, Stephen, "Thirty-seven points on the best defense in the league," Belichick was heard to say. "Suck my d---!"
Ryan said he had no problem with the Patriot coach's high-toned phraseology, but indicated he offer Belichick a not-so-gentle reminder about tone and context the next time they meet.
"It's something I'll bring up, after we beat them in the playoffs again this year," Ryan said
