Filmmaker David Lynch created this public service announcement in 1991 warning the city about its rat problem. Melding black-and-white cinematography with horrific close-ups of rat tails and teeth and scary-movie music in the background, we're sure it must have caught the attention of plenty of New Yorkers. The ad plays up littering as a major contributor to the rat Armageddon. A shot of a wholesome mother letting the wrapper of a popsicle that she gives her precious daughter float away in the wind is juxtaposed with close-ups of rat feet and tails. Judging from the trash in the subway that we saw just this morning, we're guessing the ad didn't have the lasting impression Lynch hoped for.
