Grand Central geyser

Grand Central geyser

Despite bringing bad luck indoors, umbrellas were necessary to navigate the subway system during the "rainpocalypse" of July 18.

Straphangers at Penn Station, Bryant Park, and Grand Central, among others, reported waterfalls and floods inside the stations during their commutes.

At the Penn Station platform for the No. 1, 2, 3 trains, those waiting had to avoid both the water spilling out from a grate and rain dripping down from the ceiling.

In this short video, subway musician Heidi Kole captures passengers ducking a downpour while entering a train at Penn Station. While it was not the day to wear white shorts, two people had the right idea in bright yellow ponchos.

Penn Station was not the only subway with an underground rainstorm: the F/M platform at Bryant Park had its own steady waterfall.

Grand Central managed the largest gross-out with a grate overflowing with murky, cigarette butt-filled water.

Aboveground, those unfortunate enough not to catch a cab faced hail and lightning, as seen in the clips below.
