We Were Promised Jetpacks the future of Scottish indie rock

Scottish indie band We Were Promised Jetpacks is carving out its niche in the music world.

And they aren’t alone; the band’s label, FatCat Records, also has picked up fellow Scot bands The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit.

No real music movement, however, can be considered a movement without appreciation for its roots. Folk music had Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie. Punk rock had The Stooges and the Ramones. Boy bands had The Backstreet Boys.

amNewYork takes a look back at some of the most influential Scottish rock bands.

1970s:
• Runrig: One of WWPJ guitarist Michael Palmer’s favorite Scottish bands, Runrig’s first album was recorded in Gaelic but the band later released the English-language “Dance Called America.”

1980s:
• The Vaselines: Some of this indie pop band’s songs, such as “Molly’s Lips,” were later covered by Nirvana.

• The Proclaimers: While it really broke out in the U.S. in the early 1990s on the soundtrack to “Benny & Joon,” this band’s song “500 Miles,” started to bring Scottish bands deeper into the American rock consciousness in the ’80s.

1990s:
• Mogwai: This post-rock band paved the way for the complex emotion-stirring melodies and use of distortion often heard in today’s Scottish indie scene.

• Belle & Sebastian: One of the most popular indie-rock bands around, Belle & Sebastian routinely switches up its sound from dulcet indie pop to electronica to another familiar musical setting for its lastest album, “Write About Love” — ’70s a.m. pop.
