The grisly murder of a soccer coach in the West Village on Sunday may have been a case of mistaken idenity, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tuesday.

Police are investigating the possibility that Michael Jones, 25, was knifed death by the still unknown assailant who mistook him for a man involved in a bar fight over a woman, he said.

"There may have been a 'discussion' with a woman that [the suspect] met in a bar," Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said

"We don't believe at this time that [Jones] was involved with the fight with the perpetrator in that bar," Kelly added.

The New York Medical Examiner determined that the cause of death in the horrific slashing before 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning, "was a stab wound to the torso that penetrated the heart," said spokeswoman Ellen Borakove.

A memorial for Jones will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in White Plains.
