West Village cupcake shop unveils 25-pound cupcake in honor of mayor
The owners of House of Cupcakes didn't let the mayor's perturbed reaction to their gift to the city stop them from having fun during their opening day Thursday.
Ron and Ruthie Bzdewka, the owners of the West Village pastry shop, unveiled their most talked-about creation "The Mayor," a 25-pound, 35,800 calorie cupcake that featured an image of a grumpy looking Michael Bloomberg as part of the icing.
Ron Bzdewka said he came up with the idea to poke fun at Bloomberg's anti-obesity initiatives such as the proposed big-soda ban and trans fat ban, when he opened his first NYC location.
The mayor called the stunt "one of the dumbest things people have ever done," when an amNewYork reporter asked him about it during a news conference Tuesday, but Bzdewka said he and his wife never meant to hurt his feelings.
"We thought it would make a great cupcake because [New York is] the biggest, best city in the world," he said.
The Bzdewkas, who won the Food Network competition "Cupcake Wars" in 2011, said they agree with the mayor about the obesity epidemic and will donate the giant cupcake to City Harvest. The owners also sent complimentary sugar-free cupcakes to City Hall Thursday, and "they said they love them and asked if we deliver to them," Bzdewka said.
The mayor's office didn't return phone calls for comment Thursday.
