What we know about the Bronx shooting of 2 NYPD officers

Two New York City police officers were shot in the Bronx Friday.

Here’s what we know so far:

• Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo has died, NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill said in a news conference. Tuozzolo, 41, of Huntington, was a 19-year veteran of the force, and leaves behind a wife and two young children, he added.
• In a statement, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said: “Every day, the brave men and women of law enforcement selflessly serve our communities to keep the rest of us safe. Today, a sergeant in the New York City Police Department has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and another officer is undergoing treatment.”
• The other officer, Sgt. Emmanuel Kwo, 30, suffered a leg wound and was expected to survive.
• The shooting occurred in the Van Nest area of the Bronx, just north of the Cross Bronx Expressway.
• Both officers were taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx. n A suspect was killed at the scene, according to Ed Mullins, head of the Sergeants Benevolent Association. The suspect was later identified as 35-year-old Manuel S. Rosales, of Brentwood, according to O’Neill.
• The NYPD, on Twitter, also described the events leading up to and after the shooting:
• A woman called 911 at 2:45 p.m., saying a man with a gun had broken into her apartment on Beach Avenue. Police said this initial incident may have been a domestic dispute.
• She later said the man fled in a red Jeep.
• NYPD officers spotted the Jeep a short time later and approached the vehicle. O’Neill said Rosales opened fire.
• Rosales was killed during the exchange and pronounced dead at the scene. Tuozzolo was shot in the head and pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center.
