Former Tennessee congressman Harold Ford Jr. didn’t name names when he said he isn’t running in New York’s Democratic primary for U.S. Senate because it might help a Republican win.

But it’s not difficult to imagine he might be referring to Mortimer Zuckerman. The real estate tycoon and newspaper publisher is considering a U.S. Senate run on the GOP line.

Two people familiar with the conversation say Zuckerman has even discussed the idea with Mayor Michael Bloomberg, another wealthy businessman-turned-politician. The people spoke Tuesday on condition on anonymity because the conversation was private.

Zuckerman says he hasn’t decided anything.

He’s the publisher of the Daily News and editor of U.S. News & World Report. Forbes magazine estimates his fortune at $1.5 billion.
