With Sandy Alderson in running, Mets plan more GM interviews

The Mets sincerely like former Oakland A’s general manager Sandy Alderson based on last week’s interview for their open GM’s job. But not so much that they won’t talk to other, younger candidates.

Mets COO Jeff Wilpon and assistant GM John Ricco will interview their sixth candidate, 42-year-old Dana Brown today, and they may ask permission to talk to Rangers GM Jon Daniels, 33, once Texas’ postseason ends.

Brown served as a special assistant to Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos this season after his time as the director of scouting for the Washington Nationals and their former incarnation, the Montreal Expos, during his eight previous seasons.

The Mets may never get to Daniels because Texas co-owner Chuck Greenberg recently told reporters that the Queens native “isn’t going anywhere.”

Alderson, 62, remains atop the running, however, despite his commitment to the commissioner’s office to clean up steroid use and corruption in the Dominican Republic. He undoubtedly will be added to a second round of interviews next week with Mets owner Fred Wilpon and president Saul Katz.

Dodgers assistant GM Logan White, former Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes, White Sox GM Rick Hahn and Red Sox assistant Allard Baird may also come for second interviews next week.
