A woman is dead after being struck and killed by a taxicab early Saturday morning on the border of Gramercy Park and Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan, police said.

The NYPD said police responded to a call of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle between East 16 and 17 streets near First Avenue around 3:36 a.m. The 44-year-old woman, whose identity is being withheld until family can be notified, was found laying in the bus lane on First Avenue, police said. The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The NYPD Highway Unit's Collision Investigation Squad is investigating, and a preliminary finding states the woman was laying in the road before being hit by a yellow cab. The vehicle fled the scene, police said.

An investigation is ongoing.
