A worker at an uptown Second Avenue subway construction site was hospitalized Monday afternoon with a "serious" injury after a slab of concrete fell on him, officials said.

The unnamed worker's leg was "inadvertently pinned" under pavement at around 12:45 p.m. as he worked in a trench that housed utility cables at 86th Street and Second Avenue, where the MTA is building a new subway station entrance, according to an MTA spokesman, who said it was possible the man may have been "standing in the wrong place."

EMS workers rushed the man to New York Hospital, where he was in "serious, but stable condition," according to an FDNY spokesman, who added that the man was alert and conscious. Officials said although he was not bleeding, the man may have broken a bone in his leg.

Construction workers for Skanska/Traylor were removing a section of roadway at street level before the accident occurred, MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said. He added that the accident did not put the public in any danger.

The MTA began underground blasting a few blocks away last week. The new subway line is expected to open by the end of 2016.
