Newsday honored for Sandy, Hempstead Turnpike coverage
Newsday won two awards -- for an investigation into deadly conditions along Long Island's Hempstead Turnpike and coverage of superstorm Sandy -- at the Deadline Club's annual awards banquet last night in Manhattan.
In the local news category, Newsday won for "Hempstead Turnpike: 16 Deadly Miles," written by Keith Herbert and Jennifer Maloney.
The newspaper's staff won the spot news award for "Devastated: Sandy's Trail of Ruin on LI, in NYC."
"These awards are recognition of extraordinary work that speaks to the heart of our mission -- serving the people of Long Island," said Debby Krenek, editorial director and senior vice president/digital media.
The newspaper was a finalist in seven categories, including opinion, sports reporting, mobile application, video reporting and public service.
More than 80 judges sifted through a record 500 entries to decide the winners, said Deadline Club president J. Alex Tarquinio.
"The work covered such crucial topics as the rise of China corporate malfeasance and threats to public health and safety," she said in a statement.
The Deadline Club is one of the largest chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists.
