NFL fines Richard Sherman $7,875 for taunting
Roger Goodell said this week that he "wasn't cheering" for Richard Sherman's actions in and immediately after Sunday's NFC Championship Game, and Friday he expressed his displeasure in a more direct way.
Sherman was fined $7,875 by the NFL for engaging in unsportsmanlike conduct/taunting in the final minute of the win over the 49ers. After he deflected a pass in the end zone on the game-clinching interception, Sherman followed intended wide receiver Michael Crabtree across the field and then gave quarterback Colin Kaepernick the choke sign. He was flagged for taunting at the time.
The fine is not related to Sherman's postgame interviews in which he loudly and aggressively professed the belief that he is the best cornerback in the league and that Crabtree is a "mediocre" and "sorry" player. Those interviews were water-cooler fodder all week, and on Wednesday, Sherman said his comments were "misdirected and immature."
No other player in the NFC title game was fined.
