Brookhaven National Laboratory has awarded a $5.2-million contract to a New Jersey firm to build enclosures for scientific equipment at the Upton lab.

The firm, Global Partners in Shielding of Passaic, will build the enclosures, called “hutches,” as part of the National Synchrotron Light Source II, a $912-million structure under construction at the laboratory.

“When operating by 2015, NSLS-II will produce extremely intense X-rays, carried by beamlines to scientific instruments used to do experiments. These instruments must be contained in enclosures to keep people away from direct contact with the X-rays,” lab officials said in a statement.

Global Partners will build 17 hutches and steel hardware for a concrete building that is being made by E.W. Howell of Plainview, lab officials said.

NSLS-II “will enable cutting-edge science in a variety of areas, including new energy technologies,” lab officials said.
