Nobel Prize recipient to speak at Brookhaven lab

Thomas Arthur Steitz, who won the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry, will give a lecture at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton on May 23.

Steitz was part of a team of three researchers that won the Nobel Prize for study of the structure of the ribosome, a cell component that translates genes into proteins. Steitz’s lecture will be titled, “From the Structure and Function of the Ribosome to New Antibiotics.”

He has been a member of the Yale University faculty since 1970 and is a professor of chemistry. He is also an investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a nonprofit medical research center in Maryland.

The lecture is free and open to the public, and registration is not required. Visitors should bring photo identification, a lab spokesman said.

Steitz’s lecture is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Berkner Hall on the lab campus, located off William Floyd Parkway in Upton.
