North Hempstead offers special disposal day

Residents in the Town of North Hempstead will be able to dispose of electronic waste, unwanted prescription drugs, gently used clothing and more as part of the town’s Stop Throwing Out Pollutants program at the end of the month.

The collection event will take place March 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park.

“With each recycling opportunity we offer, we come closer to our goal to change the nature of garbage,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. “We want people to reduce, reuse and recycle everything possible.”

The town will accept a variety of items.

* From the home: household chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, thermostats, batteries, disinfectants, compact fluorescent bulbs, thermostats and oil-based paints.

* Electronic waste: televisions, computers, stereos, cellphones, copiers, fax machines and printers.

* Drugs: any unused and unwanted prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines.

* Personal information: the town will shred personal documents, compact discs, X-rays, pill bottles and credit cards.

Also, in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters, the town will collect gently used clothes, stuffed animals, toys, sporting equipment, shoes, books, small rugs, bikes, scooters, luggage, picture frames, table lamps, fabric, knickknacks, silverware, glassware, dishes and cosmetics.
