The Town of North Hempstead will accept more types of discarded plastics, not merely items labeled 1 and 2.

The town will now take plastics numbered 4, 5 and 6. The town said newly accepted items will include food containers and bottles for cleaning supplies, detergent and personal care.

The town still will collect metal, glass, paper and cardboard. Acceptable metals and glasses include clean aluminum foil and tins, bottles, jars and cans. Recyclable paper and cardboard items include newspapers, magazines, phone books, folders, corrugated cardboard, clean pizza boxes, mail and loose paper.

The expansion affects residents where the town has contracted with garbage haulers, town spokesman Collin Nash said.
