North Hills Mayor Marvin Natiss said Wednesday he would likely appoint a trustee to fill the vacancy created by the death of Gerard Cohen after the village’s fiscal year begins next week.

Cohen, 66, who had been appointed to a vacancy in August and was elected to a full term on June 21, died unexpectedly the next day.

Natiss said he would make a one-year appointment to fill the position until next June, when a special election will fill the remainder of the four-year term.

“I haven’t made any decisions” about whom to appoint, he said.

In last week’s election, Cohen, along with incumbent trustee Dennis Sgambati, defeated challenger Roberta Popper. According to unofficial results, Cohen received the most votes for trustee. Natiss, who was unopposed, was re-elected mayor.

Natiss had appointed Cohen to fill the vacancy left by former trustee Marvin Rothenberg, who resigned in July.
