North Shore drummers, toilet paper star at homecoming

An 11-person drum line marched orderly into the middle of the floor at North Shore High School’s homecoming pep rally Friday. With shiny white pearl drums, contrasting black T-shirts and shades, they methodically and without expression strummed a tune they themselves wrote.

“Be daring and creative,” said senior and assistant captain Jasmine Lee. “That’s our mantra.”

After a powerful combined performance and some stand out solos, they received the most enthusiastic response from the maroon-and-white dotted crowd.

The relatively small drum line boasts only three veteran drummers, and Lee only picked up the instrument a year ago. She’s also a classical pianist and cellist. The drum line is a legacy from previous years and strives to live up to the previous standard.

“I think we managed to do that this year,” Lee said.

In a slightly less choreographed performance, each class participated in an annual mummy wrap contest where students wrap two people in toilet paper and the ones that are most covered in a two-minute time frame win.

This year -- even with teachers and administrators participating themselves -- the seniors took the prize.
