Northport’s board of trustees and zoning board of appeals are meeting jointly on March 20 to discuss two cellphone towers erected in the village without a public hearing.

Village officials attributed the premature installation of the towers to a miscommunication between the village and its attorney, James Matthews. The joint meeting next month will include a public hearing and discussions by both boards.

Crown Castle NG East Inc., based in College Point, has put up two wooden poles with telecommunication equipment atop each — one on Woodside Avenue near the highway department and the other at the intersection of Main Street and Laurel Avenue, officials said.

Crown had received approval from the zoning board early last year to do the work, but not an OK on those two locations because they were in residential areas.

When the company changed locations, Crown should have come back to the village trustees and zoning board for permission, as well as to notify the poles’ abutters, officials said.

Officials said one person has complained about one of the poles.

The joint meeting is at 7 p.m. at Village Hall.
