Commercial vehicles traveling in Northport Village will get a little extra scrutiny this summer.

Village Police Chief Ric Bruckenthal said his force plans to team up with the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section for enforcement action on landscaping and pool trucks and other commercial vehicles in the village.

Bruckenthal said the idea is not to punish, but rather to make Northport’s streets safer — especially with trucks that can carry caustic pool materials or gasoline for lawn mowers.

“We’re not looking to hurt anybody — we’re looking to seek compliance,” he said Tuesday.

This summer will be the first time that the police department has invited the motor carrier safety section into Northport, Bruckenthal said.
