Northport Village trustees voted this week to increase the sewer-use fees for some residents outside the village who are connected to the village’s sewage-treatment plant.

The change, which trustees approved at Tuesday night’s meeting, affects 41 homes on Harbor Circle in Centerport, according to Northport Mayor George Doll. While each home had been charged $400 per year for the connection, the change pushes the annual rate to $750 per year, per home.

Doll said the homes had been connected to the village’s sewage-treatment plant since 1968, when the village charged each property owner $100 per year.

The fees were raised to $200 in 1979, and to $400 in 2007. Villagers who are connected to the sewer system pay fees based on their water usage.

“Since 1979, the cost of operating the sewer plant has risen six times,” Doll said at the meeting, noting that the fee could have been raised even higher. “So they don’t go into shock, we felt we could raise the fee from $400 to $750.”
