Northport meeting on bus routes rescheduled

An informational meeting on proposed route and schedule changes for Huntington Area Rapid Transit canceled in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy has been rescheduled by Town of Huntington officials.
The meeting will be Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Northport Public Library, 151 Laurel Ave. The Nov. 3 meeting in East Northport was canceled because of Sandy.
The bus changes — the first significant route and schedule alterations since the town-operated bus system began running in 1978 — would take effect in January. Four new routes with an additional 20.5 miles of coverage would replace the system’s existing three routes. Buses would run more frequently and offer more direct service with less need to transfer among buses to complete trips, town officials said.
Two weekday Long Island Rail Road feeder routes that have lost most of their ridership would be eliminated.
Town officials also are considering increasing HART fares in the proposed 2013 budget. A single adult ride on the system would change from $1.25 to $2; rides for the elderly would rise from 50 cents to 75 cents; and student fares would rise from 75 cents to $1.25.
The new routes can be viewed on the town’s website at huntingtonny.gov/hart_bus.cfm.
HART will run more frequent service on Saturday to make it more convenient for residents to attend.
