Northport's proposed budget raises taxes 4.22%

The Village of Northport unveiled its tentative 2012-13 budget at the village board meeting on Tuesday.

The proposed $13.5-million budget includes a tax-rate increase of 4.22 percent. The tentative budget adheres to the new 2 percent state tax cap, which, after exemptions and other factors, works out to be a cap of 3.67 percent on the village’s property tax levy.

“We’ve worked very hard,” Deputy Mayor Henry Tobin said at the meeting. “This is a workable although extremely tight budget.”

Although the tentative budget adheres to the tax cap, the village board voted Tuesday to grant itself the ability to exceed the cap on the property tax levy, in case changes to the budget proposal are made.

The village’s budget year runs from March 1, 2012, to Feb. 28, 2013.

A hearing on the budget will take place Jan. 3.
