If you're of the faint of mind, this is not for you.

But if you're a Long Island high school student with a minimum combined SAT score of 1,900 (700 math, 600 critical reading, 600 writing), you may be eligible for one of five $10,000 scholarships being awarded by Northrop Grumman Corp. to students in Nassau, Suffolk, three counties in Maryland and one in Florida.

The company's NextGen Engineers Scholarship provides $2,500 a year for four years. Plus, winners are eligible for paid internships for three summers of their undergraduate program.

John Vosilla, a Northrop Grumman spokesman in Bethpage, said about 20 students are in the program now. Two, he said, will be hired when they graduate this year. Students are urged to visit a school guidance counselor for details. Applications must be postmarked by March 26.
