Number 26 for Chaminade
There have been seasons where Chaminade simply coasted to the CHSAA championship, but this wasn't one of those years.
“We knew St. Anthony’s was really good so it was certainly no cake walk,” Chaminade coach Jim Quinn said. “Some years we have been able to win relatively easy but we had to earn it this year. So there was probably more satisfaction this year.”
St. Anthony’s earned the number one seed after beating Chaminade twice this season, handing the Flyers their only league losses over the past four years. But when the two met on Friday with the CHSAA championship on the line, Chaminade showed the Friars why they have held the title for 25 of the last 30 years.
Chaminade edged out St. Anthony's 4-3 after J.T. Esposito defeated Nick Schwab, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at third singles to clinch the match and give the Flyers their fourth straight CHSAA title and 26th overall.
Senior Pat Brosnan was named CHSAA Player of the Year and will be the top seed in the individual tournament set to begin Monday at Tully Park. The top six seeds, which also includes No. 2 John Pagan (St. Mary’s), No. 3 Chris Brosnan (Chaminade), No. 4 John D’Alessandro (St. Anthony’s), No. 5 Joseph Ziccardi (St. John the Baptist) and No. 6 Andy O’Brien (Kellenberg) will receive byes in the first round of the 32-man draw.
Unfortunately for the opposition, Chaminade's success in team play generally translates to the individual tournament as well. Last year, Chris Brosnan – twin brother of Pat – won the tournament. Who finished second and third you ask? Both were from Chaminade.
