Louisiana has the Catahoula Leopard Dog. Massachusetts has the Boston Terrier. Maryland has the Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Pennsylvania has the Great Dane. So what's New York's official state dog?

There isn't one. Yet. But two state legislators are proposing the "rescue dog" as New York's official dog to promote adoption of dogs from shelters.

The measure is sponsored by Assemblyman Micah Kellner and Sen. Joseph Robach. Kellner says shelter dogs make fine pets and it's time for the state to "throw these dogs a bone."

But what about rescue cats? Maryland's state cat is the calico and Maine has the Maine Coon cat, but New York has no official feline.
